Over the last decade, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has promoted the establishment of an official "Board-Certified Medical Specialist" system, in order to improve the quality of medicine in all medical fields.
Professor Motohiro Nozaki, Plastic Surgery of Tokyo Women's Medical University serves as the President of Board of Directors of this new society.
The Inaugural Meeting of the JSSWC was held on 16-17 January, 2008 in Tokyo under the presidency of Professor Kiyonori Harii, Department of Plastic Surgery, Kyorin University School of Medicine. More than 400 plastic surgeons attended this extremely useful and successful event. Professor Takehiko Ohura, Professor Emeritus of Hokkaido University, presented the memorial lecture entitled "Historical Role of Japanese Plastic Surgery in Wound Healing and Treatment". Professor Gary Sibbald, University of Toronto, Canada, who was President of the 3rd Congress of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies, delivered the special invited lecture entitled "Infection: How to Distinguish Superficial Critical Colonization and Deep/surrounding Skin Infection". Two panel discussions were held: one on "Treatment of Severe Injuries Using Free Flaps" and the other on "Role of Plastic Surgeons in Treatment of Chronic Wound". 96 oral papers and 43 E-posters were also presented covering a wide range of topics relevant to wound healing and care, particularly from a clinical practice viewpoint.
